For people without a subscription to popular music streaming services like Apple Music or Spotify, it’s a good idea to listen to music on YouTube. It’s totally free! But there will be times when you really want to download music from YouTube to your iPhone. Unfortunately, the site itself won’t let you download any contents to your iOS device. This is due to copyright reasons.
Even if you get permission from the creator, there will not be any visible “Download” button for you to proceed. That being said, downloading music from YouTube is not impossible, you just have to find the right way to do it.
Before you jump the gun, read YouTube’s Terms of Services first.
In this article, I’ll be showing you multiples ways on how to save YouTube videos as MP3 on your iPhone.
App Store Method
The first method will always be the easiest and most convenient. As the title suggested, we found a handy app from the App Store that allows you to download videos from YouTube and convert it to MP3 file.
Download YouTube Music to iPhone with the Documents app
Step 1: Go to the App Store and install an app called Documents by Readdle.
Step 2: Open your YouTube app and tap on a video you wish to download. Now, select Share and tap “Copy Link”.
Step 3: Launch the Documents app you installed earlier and open its built-in browser. Paste the following URL: flvto.biz/youtube-to-mp3/ (direct link) and hit enter
Step 4: Paste the YouTube link from Step 2 into the field provided. Then, tap Convert to MP3.
Step 5: The FLVTO Converter will give you a downloadable link to your MP3 file. It can take awhile to convert depending on the size of your YouTube video. A progress bar will also be displayed to keep you in the loop.
Step 6: When done, you should see a big orange “Download” button. Click on it, and a Save File page will appear. You have the option to title your new MP3 file and where you want to save it in. The default location is Documents/Downloads.
Step 7: Tap Save when you’re done. Go back to the homepage of your Documents app and tap on the Downloads folder. You should see the music on YouTube.
Since the music video has been converted to MP3, you can listen to it even when you lock your iPhone or use another app. Repeat the same steps for other music from YouTube.
YouTube++ is a modified version of the YouTube app for iPhone that lets you save videos and songs to your iOS device. Compared to the previous application, this one is easier to use since you will be using the same YouTube app but with a built-in Download button.
The installation may be a bit difficult for beginners. It requires a computer (you can use a Mac or Windows, doesn’t matter).
How to Download and Install YouTube++ for iOS 11
Step #1: On your computer, click here to download the YouTube++ IPA file.
Step #2: You will also need to download a tool called Cydia Impactor. Find the link and its instructions from this page.
Step #3: Delete the official YouTube app if you still have it. Connect your iPhone or iPad to the computer.
Step #4: Open Cydia Impactor, find the IPA file from Step 1 and Drag & Drop it to the software.
Step #5: You will be asked to enter your Apple ID and password. Impactor will start installing YouTube++.
Step #6: From your iPhone, open the Settings app > go to General > Profile or Device Management > Tap on the email you entered earlier and tap Trust. (learn why here)
Step #7: Go back to your home screen and tap on the new YouTube++ app.
Noticed how it looks exactly like the old app? That’s because it is. Only some modifications were added to it. From now on, you will be able to download any videos from YouTube directly within this app. The file will then be saved into the “Downloads” folder or your Camera Roll.
Besides helping you convert YouTube to MP3 directly on your iPhone, this app also provides additional features such as ad-free experience, background playback without YouTube Red, and more.
These two are the easiest methods to help you download music from YouTube on iOS. The last resort in case both of the methods above fails would be using a web-based service like FLVTO to convert YouTube to MP3 and then import the file into your iPhone. It is more time consuming but proven to work like a charm.
One last note to users running iOS 11, you got nothing to worry about. The Documents app and YouTube++ are compatible with your version. No jailbreak is needed.
