For those of you who need a smart assistant when using your iPhone or iPad, both Voice Control and Siri can be a really good candidate.
These two features will perform various actions based on your command. For example, you can dial a number, make FaceTime call or pause your listening music all without doing any physical work.
Voice Control is excellent, but I always experience these random voice dialing incidents. Siri is useful as well, but I’m not too fond with “intelligent assistant.”
Whether you like Voice Control and Siri or not either one will remain active on your iPhone. Just one of them since both have the same activation method and so you can’t have two enabled at the same time.
How to Disable Voice Control on your iPhone
- Go to the Settings app
- Tap on General > Siri
- Turn on Siri by toggling the switch
- Select Enable Siri
Once Siri is turned on, it will replace the old Voice Control.
What if I like neither of them?
Unfortunately, one will always have to be on since Apple say so (meaning it’s a restriction). Voice Control will be activated as soon as users disable Siri.
But if you have a jailbroken device, you can now get rid of Voice Control without having to enable Siri.
How to Turn Off Voice Control and Siri
- Open up Cydia
- Go to the BigBoss repo
- Look for a tweak called No Voice Control
- Install it for your device
I didn’t buy into it at first, but it works exactly as described.
To test it out, go to the Settings app > General > Siri and turn it off. After that, press and hold the home button for a few seconds. If you do not see Voice Control turning on then, it means both features has been disabled.
From now on, you don’t have to deal with accidental phone calls or random sound coming out of your jeans pocket.
We also found another method which doesn’t involve jailbreaking your device.
- Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode
- Select Turn on Passcode
- Input your desired passcode
- Look for Voice Dial and turn it off
Be aware that this will only disables voice dialing, Music Voice Control is always enabled.
Updating to iOS 10.2
Did you know that Apple have finally lifted their restriction of having at least Voice Control or Siri enabled?
You can now disable Voice Control without having to install a Cydia tweak or turn on Siri.
- Open the Settings app
- Go to Accessibility > Home button
- Look for Press and Hold to Speak and tap on Off
This setting will ensure that when you press and hold the home button, it would not activate Siri or Voice Control.
