After using Snapchat for a few months, there are a few things I get out of it.
- The app is very complicated when starting out. But you slowly get used to it
- Snapchat waste a lot of battery due to their constant data fetching
- If you have limited mobile data, using Snapchat on the go might cause you to go over your data caps
This is why Snapchat users often find themselves running out of battery quickly and their cellular data being consumed faster than anything.
Don’t believe me? Do the analytics on your own.
Go to Settings > Cellular Data and see how much data Snapchat has used up on your iPhone. Also, check the overall battery consumption within the same app as well.
This has become an issue for me as I use Snapchat on a daily basis. I almost have to give up on it. But something good came up.
After some time playing around with the configurations and third-party apps, I’ve found a few ways to save the battery of my iPhone and my mobile data why I’m using Snapchat.
In this article, I will share those tips with you guys.
Here is even better news…
…none of the methods below require you to jailbreak your device. I know we have a list of Snapchat tweaks for jailbroken users which does most of what I mentioned, but the set of instructions below will work for anyone with an iOS device.
Turn on Travel Mode
Did you know Snapchat has a similar battery-saving mode like your iOS device? It’s called Travel Mode. Snapchat claims that when this feature is enabled, it will “reduces Snapchat’s mobile data usage.”
Usually, when you open the app, all your snaps and stories will be loaded automatically. If you turn on Travel Mode, those contents will only start loading when you tap on them.
Even though the intention of this mode is for when you’re traveling aka on the go, I would always suggest having it on because I know some people with AT&T Internet (at home) that pay extra when they go over their limit.
To turn on Travel Mode in Snapchat, go to its dedicated Settings page > Manage and activate the option.
Hide Snapchat Discover and Live Stories
As Snapchat get updated, more and more useless features were being rolled out. Take the Discover section as an example.
If you accidentally tap on one of the many featured magazines, it will start loading their news. These can be more data hogging than your regular snaps or stories as they contain more pictures, animations, and sometimes videos. As a result, when an article from CNN or Complex News start loading, you waste a lot more data.
In addition to that, Snapchat now has another section called Live Stories. After ending local stories, the application now show live events around the world. Again, if you ever tap on one, it will use your internet to load the live stories.
What do we do now?
Sadly, Snapchat has to make revenue, so an option to disable these two features is impossible to find. But with a third-party app like Snapchat++, it’s a piece of cake.
If you ever feel the need to beef up your Snapchat features or remove certain functionalities, then Snapchat++ is your best option. Currently, it is the only working Snapchat hack that let you improve the overall application without jailbreaking your iPhone.
As part of the IPA, you will have the option to disable the Discover and Live Stories as well.
How to Install Snap++ Without Jailbreak
- First of all, you will need to remove the stock Snapchat app
- Download the first IPA (it’s called Snapchat Sign in) from here
- Sideload the application using Cydia Impactor
- After that, install this .IPA file to overwrite the first one (patched version)
When you have successfully install Snapchat++ on your iPhone, the new Snapchat app will have location spoofing feature, better filters, and much more.
If you have a jailbroken iPhone and prefer a better and faster way to remove the Discover section in Snapchat, then there is a tweak designed specifically to do that.
Open Cydia and install a tweak called SnapchatNoClickbait or Phantom for Snapchat. Either one will have an option for you to remove any annoying elements in the app.
Nothing else will be included in the package. In fact, you don’t even need to configure anything. Once SnapchatNoClickbait is installed, you will notice that only the “Recent Updates” and “All Stories” sections remain in the app.
Hopefully, Snapchat will let its users hide these awful sections pretty soon.
Enable Low Power Mode
You heard that right!
Instead of letting Snapchat and other apps waste your data, Low Power Mode will come in and save the day. I don’t particularly know if this feature will do anything specifically to Snapchat, but it will disable some features on your iOS device that consume a lot of battery.
- Email fetch
- Background app refresh
- Some visual effects
We also have a list of jailbreak tweaks for Low Power Mode if you’re interested. Do note that will not give you more battery juice. They just help out with the user-experience aspect.
If you combine these three tips for Snapchat, you should be able to save a fair amount of cellular data as well as battery. Let us know if you have any other tricks.
