Which iPhone Models will work with Apple Watch Series 3?

By now, you should have seen the brand new Apple Watch Series 3 that Apple just introduced on September 12. Out of the whole event, this was one of my favorite portions. Why? Because the Apple Watch is finally getting support for GPS and LTE. This means you can make calls and no longer need to depend on your iPhone for certain tasks that require an internet connection.

Of course, you must always pair your Apple Watch Series 3 with your iPhone at all time. When the first two series were introduced, I get this question a lot, “Will my old iPhone work with the Apple Watch?”. It depends.

For the Apple Watch Series 1 and 2, all you need is an iPhone that isn’t older than the iPhone 5. Anything above that will be compatible. However, with the new Apple Watch Series 3, the compatibility has changed a bit.

Will My iPhone Work With Series 3?

Since there are two versions of the new watch, there will also be two answers to this question.

First off, according to this page, the Apple Watch Series 3 with GPS and LTE built-in will requires “iPhone 6 or later with iOS 11 or later”. If you decide to get the regular version of the Series 3 which does not include LTE, then I’m assuming the requirement remains the same as before.

List of Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + LTE) Compatible Devices

  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone SE
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 8 & 8s
  • iPhone X

Now you know. Before going out there to order your Apple Watch Series 3, make sure to find out if you also need to upgrade your older iPhone model to pair with the new watch.
