When it comes to music streaming apps on the iPhone, I personally choose YouTube over any other popular services such as Spotify or Pandora. The YouTube platform itself provide a hub for entertainment ranging from funny videos, short films, to music videos. While the application is great, the only downside of it is you can’t enjoy listening to music while using another app on your iOS device.
For example, if you play a music video and you close the YouTube app then that song will stop playing. This happen because YouTube does not allow background playback on its app unless you have YouTube Red (a paid subscription). A solution to that problem has been discovered years ago using the alternative web version of YouTube on Safari. I’ve tried it but the solution could be inconvenient sometimes.
Instead of having to sign up for apps like Spotify or pay for YouTube Red, I’m going to show you how to download videos from YouTube and save them as MP3 file on your iPhone.
How to Download YouTube Videos as Audio on iOS Device
- Go on Cydia
- Make sure the “Changes” tab is updated
- Switch over to the Search page
- Type in YouTube++ and tap Install
This isn’t the first time we mention YouTube++. It’s a great jailbreak tweak from UnlimApps that allows iPhone and iPad users to beef up the features of their YouTube app. Once the tweak is installed, you will notice several changes to the application.
First of all, there is a new section called Downloads. We will come back to this in a bit. Try to watch a few videos, note that you haven’t seen any ads right? This Cydia tweaks also act as an adblocker as well. Furthermore, users can now enjoy the background playback feature that’s only available to people who purchased YouTube Red.
To download a music video from YouTube and save it as an audio file, all you have to do is tap on the “Download” button below the video’s title. You will be prompted with different formats.
Tap on “Audio” on the bottom of the list.
Go to the “Downloads” section I mentioned earlier, and all your downloaded videos and videos will be stored there. If you wish to save them to your iPhone, then choose Export under each file. MP3 files will be sent to your Music app while MP4 aka video files will be saved to your Videos app.
YouTube Audio in the Background without Jailbreak
So you don’t have a jailbroken iPhone? That’s not a problem. We posted a tutorial for this a few months ago.
If all you care about is the background playback feature, then there are a few apps that we can recommend. When you use them, the audio in YouTube will continue to play even when you exit the app or switch to a different application.
I hope that help and enjoy.
