Between the new price announcements this week and the FedEx truck turning onto your block, it may feel that ages have passed you by.

I remember waiting by the door for my Apple watch to arrive–punching in those long tracking numbers to locate that goddamn truck so that I didn’t miss the delivery and get stuck with the all too familiar FEDEX note on the door saying “will attempt delivery again.”

And boy, when that truck pulled in front of my porch that evening, it felt like Christmas morning! So if you are feeling overwhelmed, trust me I understand!

Thus, congratulations on your new Apple Watch acquisition. Not a purchase. You buy random things. An acquisition is for those significant assets like the one you got on your wrist.

Now What?

Is the Apple Watch waterproof?

What you need to know is that the Apple Watch is water resistant not waterproof. An occasional rain shower with Miss Siri is not going to upset anyone, however, if you are planning to swim with the fishes…

…Think again.

Users should also keep these conditions in mind:

You are not to allow these lovely little things to sit unattended in direct sun for extended periods of time, undergo dramatic changes in temperature or humidity, OR be left in a car on hot days. Storing and using your device outside of the recommended temperature range could shorten its battery life or cause other damage.

Make sure you keep your Apple Watch in a nice and cozy temperature at all time.

The above statements are for anyone with an Apple Watch first generation and Series 1. The new Apple Watch is water resistant up to 50 meters (basically everyday use), and so we considered it waterproof, and you can swim with it as well.

With that being said, if you have the most recent model which is Series 2, the waterproof issue shouldn’t concern you.

If not, make sure to give it some juice overnight. Increasingly these days most electronic devices feel a little lonely, so to use the watch, you will need to pair it with your iPhone.

No iPhone. No Problem. You need to return this one and order a different Apple Watch. Trust me; there’s a bunch out there that come in beautiful colors just for you.

Let’s Get You Geared Up

Since you have the right watch paired with the right iPhone, let’s get you situated while pretending you still have some of that beer money stashed away.

Two chargers: one for at home and one in the backpack. I think I have used the traveling one three times in six months, and all three times it was worth the cost and hassle.

Apple’s charger looks a bit dorky, but it’s solid, and you can use Lightning Cable (long 2-meter cable is included that’s nearly 6 feet for those on this side of the pond.)

Fitness tracking and sleep monitoring are the most used functionality on the Apple Watch. There are hundreds of apps just dying to meet you with promises to turn you into Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie.

For the regular users, here’s your 10-second spiel on things the device is supposed to do for you.

Notifications at a Glance

No more pulling the iPhone out of your pocket every time there is an incoming notification unless you dig that and it’s totally fine if that’s your thing.

Siri on Your Wrist

Ask her questions. You can ask her to remind you to add stuff to your grocery list, set the lights in your house to 20%, have her play your favorite band, start a timer for 17 minutes, or ask her if you should bring an umbrella with you today.

And much more:

If you still have money left after ordering all the accessories, you can use Apple Pay to pay whoever or wherever you want.

Things They Didn’t Want You to Know

I remember I wanted to install every app out there to test my watch. Trust me, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Don’t install everything that is available on the App Store.

Get all firmware updates done and out of the way first, before doing a bunch of setups and personalization. Install 3rd party apps on a case-by-case basis. First, check if the stock Apple apps cover your needs. These apps are pretty decent particularly the Workout app. They perform much better regarding performance. Your initial sync will take forever if you install all apps.

Don’t display battery life on your watch face or get in the habit of checking it. The unit charges pretty fast. One hour of battery charge usually has all the juice it usually needs.

Fine-tune your notifications via the Watch app

I find ‘Prominent’ notifications feature worth turning on, as I instantly know whether it’s something that needs my attention (e.g. iMessage, email, push notification), or whether it’s just the Watch telling me I’ve hit a milestone, made an achievement or need to stand up. Seriously, you can drop the Clash of Clans notifications on your watch.

And while at it, Go to the Settings app -> Brightness and Text Size -> Text Size, and turn that down as much as you can handle. It makes it reading notifications better with less scrolling. In case you can’t get the push notification system to work, we got a quick fix here.

There are tons of Apple Watch apps out there like I said.

Again, only install apps that are suitable for you.

Experiencing Problems on Your Apple Watch

If it were up to you, you’re not going to have any problems with your Apple Watch. But then you have the watchOS updates and various third-party apps. So things sometimes get a little out of sorts.

When that happens, go the old fashioned way for a quick fix and try restarting the watch by pressing and holding the side button until you see the Power Off slider. Next, Drag the slider to turn off your device completely.

After you turn off your Apple Watch, press and hold the side button again until you see the Apple logo. If the problem is a major one, try a force restart by pressing and holding both the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo.

These two tricks should keep you going!

And Please…please …no matter what you do, Don’t call it an iWatch. Grow Up. You are no longer a rookie.
