You think games like Pokemon Go and Micromon from the App Store are the closest to the good old retro gaming?
Not quite! It’s now possible to bring back the classic Pokemon and other Game Boy Advance games on your iPhone. Using the popular GBA4iOS, playing Super Mario Kart or any of your favorite classic games is just a tap away.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to install the GBA4iOS emulator and getting started with the ROMs as well.
How to Install GBA4iOS on iPhone and iPad
iOS developer Riley Testut created this emulator with a lot of excellent built-in features like Dropbox support, cheat codes, wireless linking, and much more.
Step 1: Open up your Safari browser and go to http://iemulators.com/gba4ios
Step 2: Download and Install GBA4iOS v2.1
Step 3: You will receive a popup asking whether you wish to download the app, tap on Install
Step 4: Since Apple has put restriction in their iOS 9, you will need to go to Settings app > General > Profile
Step 5: Look for something that start with qingdao and choose Trust (read this for more details)
Return back to your home screen and now you can have access to open the application. Notice how everything is now blank and only its settings and navigation is visible.
Where to find Pokemon and other ROMs for iOS?
There is no built-in store in the emulator for you to grab the ROMs that you want. But it’s very easy to download them from third-party sources.
Warning: According to this post, using emulation and unauthorized roms can get you in trouble.
The next and last step is to download the game’s data files or known as a ROM. Some of the sites I usually visit are Love ROMs and CoolRom. Once the file is downloaded, tap on “Open in…” and choose GBA4iOS. After that, it should load the game right away.
